Mukilteo Lighthouse   •   Mukilteo, WA
The Mukilteo Lighthouse is one of the most charming of Washington's lights, and marks the waterway at Point Elliot on the east side of Possession Sound. The lighthouse is easily accessible and there is a ferry landing close by. I visited this lighthouse on a Saturday afternoon and it was quite busy with tourists.

Built in 1906, Mukilteo Lighthouse is located on an historic tract of land where, in 1855, Governor Isaac Stevens of Washington Territory signed an important peace treaty with Indian leaders of twenty different tribes. The two keeper's buildings were built in 1905. Electricity was installed at the lighthouse in 1927, and the kerosene lamp was replaced by an electric bulb.

The lighthouse is maintained by the Mukilteo Historical Society. This group of volunteers opens the lighthouse to the public on weekends from noon to 4 pm. On display inside is the Fresnel lens from the Desdemona lighthouse. A guide escorts visitors to the top of the tower. Of the two buildings that served as keeper's quarters, one is in use today as a gift shop. There you can purchase reasonably-priced souveniers including, of course, miniature replicas of the Mukilteo Lighthouse.

From Seattle, head North on either I-5 or Highway 99 to WA-525. Follow the signs to the Mukilteo Ferry. The lighthouse is about 3 blocks south of the ferry terminal.
